In 2015, Deborah Greene was doing her shopping when her brother phoned her with the news that their father had just killed himself. In the powerful open letter below, Deborah thanks the total strangers who comforted and helped her as she broke down in the middle of a supermarket trying to deal with the news. Deborah has given The Independent permission to republish the letter in full. She told us that, in doing so, she hopes to humanise the issue of suicide, the lives it impacts and the pain it causes.
